CLMA Siouxland Chapter - Board Meeting
The meeting was called to order by Kari Nornes at 1:10 p.m. in Sioux Falls, SD.
Members present included Kari Nornes, Wanda Dally, Karen Jepperson, Jill Hanley, Larry Weaver, and Rick Pudwill. Twila Henning was not present.
Minutes were approved from last meeting.
Larry presented the treasurer's report. Our current checkbook balance is $5238.88. We approved allocation of $1886.70 for reimbursement to Kari Nornes for the President’s trip to Salt Lake City in June (approved by the chapter previously).
Web Site
Bill Hofer has agreed to have Sioux Valley Clinical Laboratories pay for maintenance of the website again for this year (cost is $430) for sponsorship on the website.
There is a vendor contract due in July. Karen will send the letter (for Roche) to them for the renewal (they have indicated they do want to renew).
Continuing Education Events
Rick updated us regarding the SDAHO meeting. Twila Henning will be speaking on QC from 8:00 to 10:00 am on Thursday, September 25; break; Kathy Zirpel will speak on Six Sigma Testing in the Lab from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.; the general luncheon and keynote speaker will be from 11:30 to 2:15; we will have our CLMA members meeting at 2:30 p.m. The Exhibit Show and Social Hour is scheduled from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
We also agreed that we will plan another December meeting of some kind. Twila Henning was suggested as a speaker for that. We will plan it further at the next Board Meeting.
National Chapter Member Award
Twila Henning received the national award in Salt Lake City in June. Kari shared the nomination that we submitted.
CLMA Management Award Nominees
We have not received any nominations this year. Kari will contact two individuals who called her but did not actually submit a nomination. IF they do not submit a nomination by Friday, August 8, we will not submit a nomination this year for SDAHO.
Member Survey
The Chapter Needs Assessment Survey was sent to members April 30, 2003. We reviewed the responses. A copy is attached to the minutes.
Membership Statistics
We will include membership statistics in the President’s Newsletter, but decided not to list names of members with lapsed memberships.
Education Committee Objectives
Kari suggested a committee of members to help plan the fall SDAHO meeting and also to help with audio conferences. We will discuss further next time.
Joint Contract with SDSCLS Board and Siouxland CLMA Chapters
Kari, Rick and Jill attended a joint meeting to discuss the joint contract with ASCLS and agreed on a contract. The contract had been changed significantly from what was verbally agreed upon when Kari received it from Mona Gleysteen for review. We discussed the draft and SOP of the contract sent by Mona Gleysteen and made several updates to it. Kari will make changes/corrections that we addressed, send us a copy of the updated document before sending it to Mona Gleysteen.
Next meeting
Our next meeting will be held following the member meeting at SDAHO on Thursday, September 25, 2003. The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Karen Jepperson, Secretary

1. Do you feel the educational programs at the meetings are adequate? Yes 13 No 0
Suggestions for topics
- Compliance issues, billing and reimbursement issues
- You are doing a great job
- Regulations, personnel assessment, incorporating new diagnostic tests in the small hospital lab. By this I mean making small labs aware of new tests coming out with diagnostic value to small hospitals. Also, informing us of procedures available to small labs without “breaking the bank”. Sometimes I’m not aware of new state-of-the-art tests that we could easily perform here (maybe I’m the only one in the dark sometimes!)
- Microbiology topics
Speaker suggestions
- Twila Henning—she has a wealth of knowledge and resources

- Registration costs 1
- Convenience of program site 1
- Travel and lodging costs 3

7. Should our chapter be doing more for regional student communication/employee
recruitment/career fairs? Yes 12 No 1
(e.g., have a display/exhibit at career fairs around the state)
- Don’t feel this is the right place. Go to high schools and freshmen (college) biology or chemistry department. Med Tech programs are unique in that you know what you are going to be. We need to focus on those freshmen or HS seniors before they really decide what they want to be.
Comments about most valuable service or program CLMA offers
- I’m just new—haven’t experienced much yet.
- The opportunity to network with other members about any number of current laboratory issues including compliance, reimbursement, medical necessity, coding and inspections/surveys.
- The most valuable resource would be to keep us informed. Education. I’m from a small facility and we can’t afford to go to big conventions. To have the latest, breaking news/regulations conveyed to use is my biggest need.
- Networking.
- There is a benefit to going off site to attend an educational meeting. Not only does it boost morale of staff by getting them out of the facility but it also gives them a chance to visit with other techs from other facilities.
- Continue to serve as conduit for regional and national issues affecting lab management.
- I think it would be beneficial to have a member of the National CLMA present at a program at the Joint Spring meeting periodically to not only share information but also to allow non-members to see the talent and expertise that is available through CLMA. The program in Sioux Falls presented by Kathryn Ayres was excellent—sharing what CLMA is doing on the political front and what is ahead was very informative.
- I get the most value out of compliance/regulatory audioconferences and the networking I can do when attending meetings. I also appreciate the e-mail newsletters. I think that CLMA could play a key role in promoting the profession by recruiting prospective students into the field (public awareness). Lobbying legislators is another important role.
