CLMA Siouxland Chapter Meeting
May 4, 2005
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Rick Pudwill at 12:30 p.m. in Rapid City at the Spring meeting. Members present included Mike Dott, Karen Jepperson, DeeAnn Lovett, Elaine Nelson, Patty Buus, Connie Thury, Wanda Dally, Rick Pudwill, Bev Ulmer, Dianne Dell, Jill Hanley, Mel Heinz, John Kangas, and Twila Henning.
MINUTES
Minutes were approved from the last meeting held in December, 2004.
TREASURER’S REPORT
John Kangas presented the Treasurer’s report. Our current check book balance is $4342.01 and the CD as of 2/11/05 was $5839.97. We discussed having a shorter term on our CD to take advantage of the higher CD rates (our current rate is 1.99%). There is a $10 penalty for early withdrawal of the CD. We decided to cancel the current CD and pay the penalty and get a six month CD at the higher rate. We will re-evaluate this at the September meeting to see if we want to continue this way.
Note: Edited information May 26, 2005
Rick Pudwill and John Kangas looked further into this issue and found that the 6 - month rate is not as good as the annual rate. If we pay the penalty, there would be no interest available after the change. They decided to leave it as it is for now until November and then check the 6-month rates again.
OLD BUSINESS
Website Changes
We have implemented the suggestions from the last meeting on our website. There is now a page where you can enter information to post on the calendar of events. Complete the form with the information and it will go to Rick Pudwill to approve to place on the website. It was suggested that the location of the event be placed on the first page of the calendar for more information on that page.
Twila will send some educational forms to place on the website. We have updated the officers listed, also.
Membership Statistics
Our current membership is 51 members.
NEW BUSINESS
National Convention Report
Rick Pudwill shared information from the National CLMA convention, held in Chicago in March.
National CLMA has a new CEO, Dana Procsal, and there are five strategic initiatives:
1. Member relations
2. Corporate relations
3. Legislative and regulations
4. Education
5. Collaboration
A new flow chart of the national organization will be on our website.
National Legislative Symposium
Karen Jepperson, CLMA Siouxland chapter representative to the National Legislative Symposium in Washington DC March, 2005, reported to the chapter. Our chapter was one of only five nationally who sponsored a CLMA member to the joint symposium. South Dakota also had two members of ASCLS and one student representative. There were more than 130 lab professionals representing 40 states.
Attached is an article that was featured in the CLMA Vantage Point, April 2005, that Karen wrote concerning her trip. She has also received a letter from Stephanie Herseth’s office and also from John Thune’s office regarding her visit.
It is so important for us to remain advocates for our profession. We should encourage a representative attendance at this annual event.
Continuing Education for 2005
We agreed that we should continue to have an educational seminar, probably near the end of the year or in the fall. Some suggestions for speakers were state legislators, a National Board member, and Twila suggested a seminar on Facility Financial Management. Rick will consider checking with Jeff Boothe for the SDAHO meeting.
The education committee will help plan a program with the third meeting of the year. Rick will see if anyone else wants to be on the education committee (current committee members are Bev Ulmer, Erica Bolte, Kathy Winter, and Mel Heinz).
ASCLS/CLMA Joint Contract for Spring Meeting 2006
The contract for this year is 20%. Rick will contact Pat Tille…it was suggested that we try to get 25% for next year and we encourage the meeting to be on the eastern side of the state for better attendance.
Member Recognition
We recognized members who have renewed their membership this year with letters and also presented certificates to those with 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of membership.
.
Our next meeting will be in September at the SDAHO meeting in Rapid City, SD. The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
Karen Jepperson, Secretary
