CLMA Siouxland Chapter Meeting

May 05, 2004

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Kari Nornes at 12:30 p.m. in Huron, SD. Members present included Kari Nornes, Karen Jepperson, Dee Ann Lovett, Kathy Zirpel, Mary Parr, Patty Buus, Connie Thury, Wanda Dally, Carmelle Miller, Marsh Houska, Mike Dott, Dianne Dell, Jill Hanley, Mel Heinz, Deb Piper, Twila Henning, Elaine Nelson, John Kangas.

MINUTES

Minutes were approved from the last meeting held in December 2003.

TREASURER’S REPORT

There was no report in Larry’s absence. The February Board Meeting report was read.

OLD BUSINESS

Siouxland Chapter Website

Karen sent 42 website sponsorship vendor renewal letters and new sponsorship letters. Owen Bain updated a vendor list.

Membership Statistics

Current membership is 54 members with one lapsed membership.

CAC Alternate Position

The Board listed qualifications and responsibilities for the position. Anyone interested in applying for the position can contact Kari by July 30th, 2004. The Board will review all applications in August, and make a decision.

Chapter By-laws

The Board reviewed the By-laws on April 28, 2004 during the Board meeting. The proposed changes were submitted to the National Chapter Bylaws Committee for review. Once approved, we will have our membership vote also for approval.

NEW BUSINESS

New CLMA Image—“A Resource for Laboratory Professionals”

National CLMA is promoting a new image that is more inclusive to all laboratory personnel. We will be updating our chapter logo (also website, stationery, display materials). National CLMA will work with our chapter to help make the transition.

We watched the image piece from National CLMA and will add the power point presentation to our website for reference by the members.

CLMA Management Award

It was decided to change the name of the award to “CLMA Siouxland Chapter Leadership Award” so that it would not exclude non-managers. Kari will send a letter to CEOs/Administrators of hospitals/laboratories explaining the Chapter award and encouraging nominations from their facilities. We need to receive the nominations by July 30, 2004, for presentation at the SDAHO meeting in the fall.

Membership Continuing Education for 2004

  • SDAHO Fall Meeting is September 22-24, 2004 at the Sheraton Convention Center in Sioux Falls. Rick Pudwill, coordinator of our Education committee, will work with the Education committee to plan this event for our CLMA members.
  • A December educational meeting will be held as our membership drive.
  • There was a motion approved to pursue our contract with SDSCLS again with the task force committee. Our current contract lists our commission from the joint meeting as 20%. There was a suggestion that we share expenses for Legislative Day between the two organizations so we can both have representatives at it. Nothing was decided.
  • CLMA members should be receiving emails from Christine Diehl, CLMA President, Kathy Ayres, Director of Regulatory Affairs, and the Vantage Point. If you are not receiving them, please contact the National CLMA.

New Board Positions

Mike Dott and Wanda Dally will be calling members to get names to nominate for the following positions that will be vacated at the end of 2004:

  • Treasurer
  • President-Elect
  • Board Member

The names will be on a ballot at the SDAHO meeting in the fall and the vote will take place then.

CLMA PAC

National CLMA PAC will contribute a portion of the funds raised to Senator Tom Daschle, SD, for promoting laboratory legislative issues. There was approximately $18,000 awarded to 6 different legislators. We will need to have a CLMA member available to present the check to Senator Daschle. When we find out the details of the date and time, we will let our members know so that as many of you can attend. We will try to get a picture of the event for our website.

Advocacy Materials

There are new advocacy materials available to members if desired. All Board members have a notebook that contains the legislative bills and letters for advocacy. See Kari Nornes for details. We discussed contacting our congressmen so that they are aware of our organization and will think of using us as their resource in laboratory-related issues. We will consider having future conference calls for our members with a congressman. Kari will email members when a date and time has been determined. If anyone is interested in being involved with a conference call or person to person visit, contact Kari. We would like 4-5 additional members to be on the call.

Member Recognition

We handed out certificates to members with years as member of CLMA. We also awarded a certificate to Jill Hanley for her contribution as a Board Member last year. We will continue to award the certificates for recognition at the Spring and Winter meetings.

Huron State Fair Help in September

Kari will contact Barb Johnson to determine our role in helping draw PSAs at the state fair in Huron. We will have promotional pieces about the laboratory available at the fair. It is in September after Labor Day.

Meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
