CLMA SIOUXLAND CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES
May 5, 2006
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by president, Rick Pudwill, at 12:30 PM at the Oaks Hotel in Sioux Falls at the Spring Meeting. Members introduced themselves. Members present included Linda Karel, Twila Henning, Marjorie Ness, Elaine Nelson, Wanda Dally, Patty Buus, Mel Heinz, Jill Hanley, DeeAnn Lovett, Connie Thury, John Kangas, Karen Jepperson, Kay Knoblock, Bev Ulmer, Terry Erickson, Harold Eichman, and Kathy Winter.
MINUTES
Kathy Winter made a motion to approve the Minutes of the last Chapter Meeting and Bev Ulmer seconded the motion. Minutes were therefore approved from the last meeting held December 8, 2005.
TREASURER’S REPORT
John Kangas presented the Treasurer’s report. The current balance is $3029.70. The CD was deposited in December of 2005. The current bank account may be changed in order to get a better interest rate and also to obtain a debit card. The debit card would be used by chapter members/officers to book flights and reserve hotel rooms. Expense receipts would still have to be submitted. There is still some paper work involved to get this account change accomplished. Twila Henning made a motion to find the best deal available, and this was seconded by Elaine Nelson.
OLD BUSINESS
Website Updates
We still need vendors for sponsoring the CLMA Siouxland Chapter Website. Any help from the members would be appreciated. When you are talking to your sales representatives, reagent vendors, or instrument vendors, ask for their support for CLMA. The Fall Meeting, being three days, should be well attended by vendors.
Membership Statistics
Our current membership is 47 members. Member and renewal letters continue to be sent as memberships are renewed. Linda Karel is a new member. Carmen Payne from Pierre, also, is a new member. We were at 52 members, so we need to contact the ones that did not renew.
Education Committee/Event Planning Committee
Rick announced that Dianne Dell and Jill Hanley will be the Event Planning Committee. They will find facilities, organize events, and design the brochures for the next two years, and have the calendar come out in January to make attendance planning more efficient. They will work
in conjunction with the Education Committee.
NEW BUSINESS
Chapter Advocate
Terry Erickson is the Siouxland Chapter’s Chapter Advocate. Rick was in contact with Lea Owens from National CLMA regarding Terry’s exact title and whether she will be a liaison or representative. There is a template available or we can develop our own set of standards. Terry said that she would look at the website and e-mail Rick her comments
PAC
The original goal was $12,000.00. That was met immediately, so the new goal is $20.000.00. Rick reminded all members to donate. Political Figures can represent lab members in a good way. We will support our South Dakota congressmen/women, but we need to know if they are on the committees that deal with laboratory issues. It would be great to have a South Dakota Senator or Representative or one of their aides at one of our upcoming meetings, especially SDAHO.
Patty Buus and Terry Erickson will contact their Washington Offices to check on the feasibility of getting them to talk at an upcoming event. All members were in favor of this.
Chapter Bylaws
Past President Kari Nornes sent out the Chapter Bylaws in 2004. Somehow they never officially were approved. One of the changes was the terminology of lab managers to lab professionals. These Bylaws have been approved by the Board and have been sent to the National Office. Rick will get them posted on our website.
2005 Activity Survey, Year-End Strategic Evaluation
The Activity survey has been sent in and the Strategic Evaluation will be on the website.
2006 Strategic Objectives
The objectives that the President Rick Pudwill set for 2006 are:
- Four Board meetings ( Next meeting 7/26/06 at Parkston)
- Three educational events
- Three business meetings
- PAC money
Review 2006 CLMA Chapter Success Standards and Core Requirements
These appear difficult to accomplish and may be too challenging for the smaller chapters. It would take complete member participation in order to meet the highest honor. The Standards are on the National Website and Rick asks that all members review these standards prior to our next business meeting. He would like to select one Core Requirement to be our Chapter’s goal for 2006 at the next business meeting.
Discuss Fundraising Events
The Board decided to try a Chapter-wide 50/50 raffle during lab week this year in an attempt to earn money for the purchase of display necessities. The best week for fundraising was discussed at the meeting and it was decided that Lab Week would be the best time. We should be thinking about fundraisers for next year.
Purchase of table cloth and Chapter pins
Instead of purchasing an expensive booth display, the Board Members decided to purchase a table cloth with Siouxland printed on it along with the CLMA logo. The table cloth would be black with the gold lettering. Rick will try to have the Siouxland logo added as well. The cost would be around $300.00. The 50/50 raffle during Lab Week totaled $267 and the winner was drawn at the meeting. Connie Thury was the lucky person to have won $133.50. Way to go Connie!
2006 Membership Continuing Education Events
- SDAHO September 20-22: There have been several issues brought up at the planning meetings for the future SDHAO Meetings. The new price for the laboratory portion of the meeting will be $75.00 (the fee was $65.00 and the lab was one of the lower priced sections; some attendees took advantage of the lower fees and signed up under our section to attending their meetings). The Siouxland Chapter receives $25.00 of the registration fee. Also, the $300.00 that we receive to help with our cost of obtaining and paying speakers may not happen in the future. Another issue is the program. We are encouraged to have our own tract for an entire day. This might be cost prohibitive.
We are encouraged to NOT attend the evening banquet. The CLMA Siouxland Chapter would like to keep ties with SDAHO, but SDAHO needs to do a better job of communicating with us. Rick will try to talk with Rebecca Craddock about our concerns.
- Fall Meeting: The speaker slots have been filled. CLMA President Judy Lien and PAC Advocate Mary Jo Boniface will be speaking at this meeting. There is going to be a student breakfast session which will give seasoned technologists a chance to visit with future techs.
There is still advertisement available for the Silver section. Also, any door prizes would be appreciated. There was discussion about always having a Fall Meeting, because the Spring Meeting is scheduled at a busy time of the year. The Region V Meeting would be a factor in the fall of the year.
Miscellaneous Topics
Twila Henning gave a report on CAC in regards to Occult Blood testing for stool specimens.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be September at the SDAHO Meeting in Sioux Falls. Wanda Dally made a motion for adjournment which was seconded by Kay Knockblock. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 PM.
