CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Kari Nornes at 12:30 pm in Sioux Falls (Radisson). Those present included Jill Hanley, Dianne Dell, Mary Beth Sik, Erica Boltjes, Jean Ziemer, Mike Dott, Karen Jepperson, Kathy Zirpel, Twila Henning, Deb Piper, Owen Bain, DeeAnn Lovett, Roberta Kafka, Kari Nornes, Mary Parr.
MINUTES
Minutes from the September 25, 2003, meeting were approved.
TREASURER
Larry Weaver (in absentia) reported a balance of $ 3,708.93 in our checking account. The YTD income is $2161.80 and YTD Expense is $3066.78. The CD current value is $5727.30. Note that deposits from SDAHO (totaling $1035) have not been included in the total income. There was a question regarding the rate for the CD and if we found one that has a better return. We will have Larry report on that.
OLD BUSINESS
Siouxland Chapter Web-site
Please encourage new vendors to sponsor our Web-site. There is a template letter on the web-site that can be customized with your name and addressed to any vendor. Our current vendor contracts provide $1287.00 income for our chapter.
Membership statistics
Our total membership for the chapter is 55, with 2 lapsed memberships. We tried to encourage a chapter membership drive with a contest at this meeting. There were three non members who attended and we randomly selected Sue Strasberg to receive a waived registration for the seminar. John Kangas was the CLMA member who was selected to receive a denim shirt (members who sponsored a non-member were eligible).
Kari distributed a listing of a comparison of memberships of all CLMA chapters. Of the 75 listed, the average membership is 64 members. The Siouxland chapter has 55 members currently.
We discussed ideas to get new members to join. One idea is to send a letter to the North Dakota group. They are members of the National CLMA but do not belong to a regional chapter. Kari will write to them regarding that possibility.
NEW BUSINESS
Ballot Results
Ballots were tallied for Board member and Secretary positions for the next two years. The results were Mike Dott was elected as Board Member and Karen Jepperson as Secretary. These positions are effective January 1, 2004. Thank you to Jill Hanley for her contributions in serving on the Board as a Board Member.
Membership Continuing Education Opportunities for 2004
The following dates are set for the coming year. Please note the dates so you can plan to attend as many as possible:
- CLMA/ASCP 2004 Conference and Exhibition, Atlanta, GA
- ASCLS/CLMA Spring Meeting, Crossroads Convention Center, Huron, SD
- SDAHO Fall Meeting, Sheraton Convention Center, Sioux Falls, SD
- CLMA Siouxland Winter Meeting
Education Committee
Kari submitted a proposed SOP for the education committee to encourage more people to be actively involved. It is for three Siouxland Chapter members who are not members of the Board. Erica Boltjes volunteered to help on the committee. Other names that were mentioned who might be interested but were not present were Bev Ulmer and Mel Heinz. Kari will contact them about serving on the committee. (edit: Kari has contacted them both and they have agreed to serve on the committee).
We discussed possible topics for the joint ASCLS/CLMA spring meeting and it was suggested that Kathy Hansen speak on Licensure. Owen has already contacted Rick Panning. Also suggested was cardiac indicators and having a cardiologist speak on that.
New CLMA Logo
Effective February 2004 there will be a new CLMA National Logo.
Silent Auction
We approved sending a Black Hills gold bracelet as a Silent Auction gift for the National meeting in March. Kari will take care of sending it to them.
CAC Alternate
Twila Henning is our representative on CAC but we need to select an Alternate who can be at the meetings if she can not attend. Qualifications and responsibilities include:
- Have knowledge of CPT and ICD 9 coding
- Ability to communicate
- No term limits
- Watch draft LMRPs and comment on them
- Attend meetings when scheduled
Kari will draft an SOP for the CAC Alternate position and send an email to members with the protocol and ask for a volunteer.
Political Action
Twila asked again if there is anyone who wants to help with the Cancer Association with Barbara Johnson (Senator Tim Johnson’s wife). We need to contact Senator Johnson’s office to get his schedule for a time when we could talk to him about concerns. Kari will contact his office and also Senator Tom Daschle’s office and email members with their schedule availability.
It was suggested that some PAC dollars (from National CLMA) go to Senator Tom Daschle because of his opposition to the Medicare co-pay bill in support of laboratories.
CLMA Political Action Committee support—you can send in contributions. We distributed forms for anyone who wants to contribute.
We did not have time to have breakout sessions, but we all need to think about future educational topic ideas, how can we recruit new members and maintain current membership, and how we can raise more revenue for the chapter.
Next meeting
Our next meeting will be held at the May joint meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:20 p.m. We listened to the CLMA Audioconference , “Laboratory Compliance: 2004 Coding and Billing Update” following the meeting.
